A former geology professor with a head for leadership, Dr. Yuri Prokhorov has dedicated decades of his life aboard the Arvad to ensuring that everyone knows what they will need to survive on an alien planet. While he is a dedicated advocate for a solid foundation of the “hard” natural sciences, he is also committed to all students having at least a minor degree in a “soft” social science or one of the arts. He supports this policy with the question, “What is the point of bringing humans on this voyage if we end up leaving behind their humanity?”
While he has been out of the geology facility for a while, Yuri is still a geologist at heart. His most prized possession is a small rock collection that was originally carried on board the Arvad a century and a half ago by some now-forgotten rockhound. This collection would have undoubtedly consumed much of that person’s individual weight allowance on the surface-to-LEO leg of the voyage, and now represents the largest collection of Earth rocks aboard…because no one else thought to stuff their carry-on full of stones.
This rock collector must have died around a century ago, and their collection was stored in some unknown location for decades until an anonymous student brought it into the geology faculty office and left it at the front desk. The administrative staff brought it to Yuri’s office, and he was the first to identify the true value of it. Lacking any other claimants, the priceless collection became his.
