Vikram Jay Stephenson, the Head of Engineering, staunchly believes that every problem has a solution, and that with the right application of mathematics, physics, chemistry (and the occasional bit of biology), any problem that can be identified by humans can be solved by humans. He has an almost boyish sense of wonder and curiosity, and never seems to get overwhelmed or frustrated no matter how complex his work challenges get. He is very passionate about his work, and is always excited to see what new puzzle the Chief Steward, the CTO, or even the High Commander will bring him next.
However, he also lives by the motto “work smarter, not harder”. He does not believe in being wasteful or inefficient. Despite Vikram’s “can do” attitude, he never does something just for the sake of doing it. If something can be done more economically, then there’s no reason to spend more time or energy or materials on it. If a process can be done in one less step, why would anyone waste their time with the extra step?
But he’s not only about metal and power and heat; his private quarters contain the largest collection of orchids aboard the ship. He loves tending to the many different varieties, and he enjoys the challenge of providing each one with what they need to not only grow, but to thrive. His detailed notes and data about his beloved flowers are a testament to his passion for coaxing these delicate lifeforms to bloom.
