Wikipedia has become an esential part of the internet landscape. For many, it is the first stop in a deep dive on a topic. With over six million articles in English alone and millions more in other languages, Wikipedia provides a near endless supply of knowledge to users across the globe. One of the reasons for Wikipedia’s success is the dedicated community of users who tirelessly contribute their time and expertise to create and maintain high-quality content. These users not only add new information but also edit and update existing content, ensuring that Wikipedia stays current, accurate, and relevant.

In this activity, I wanted to see what these users’ activity looked like. I chose the relatively innocuous page of beavers. Using the wikifunctions library for python, I was able to find the top 5 contributors to the beaver page and take a closer look at the top contributor.

This user, known by the screename “LittleJerry,” has devoted a significant amount of time and energy to the Wikipedia page about beavers. LittleJerry’s passion for these fascinating creatures has led them to make the most edits to the beaver article on Wikipedia by a signifigant margin. Making 1246 edits, they destroyed their competitors “Aranae” and “Twofingered Typist” who only made 93 and 65 edits respectively . Beavers, best known for their dam-building skills and their impact on ecosystems, are an essential part of many environments. Their activities create wetlands that provide habitat for numerous species and help regulate water flow in rivers and streams. By maintaining the beaver page on Wikipedia, LittleJerry is helping to raise awareness about the importance of these animals and their crucial role in maintaining healthy ecosystems.

LittleJerry’s contributions to the beaver page on Wikipedia were especially impressive in the year 2020, when they made the most edits to the article. This period of intense activity saw a significant expansion of the content, incorporating new research and findings that enhanced the overall quality of the page. LittleJerry’s dedication to the beaver page in 2020 helped ensure that Wikipedia users had access to the most up-to-date and accurate information about these incredible animals.

One possible reason for the surge in LittleJerry’s edits in 2020 could be the growing awareness of the critical role that beavers play in shaping ecosystems and mitigating the effects of climate change. It also could be a result of the global pandemic and our friend Littlejerry having way too much time on their hands. Either way, as more and more people recognize the importance of beavers, LittleJerry’s work on the Wikipedia page serves to educate and inform a broader audience about these fascinating creatures. Their passion and dedication to sharing knowledge about beavers are a testment to the power of Wikipedia as a platform for disseminating information and fostering a deeper understanding of the world around us.
