Examples of graphs, considering suggestions above

Example#1: Bar graph

Bar graph. Although we have different product groups (subcategories) it is not necessary to use different colour for each group of products. This is an example of nominal comparison. Do you see, how sans-serif font can communicates nicely? (made in Photoshop by myself)

Example #2: Line graph

Line graph. Instead of classical legend, we can use labels of categories right next to the lines. Different colours are used for clearer distinction. If all lines were of the same colour, viewer could loose track. When black-and-white graph is our only option, different shapes on lines (circles, triangles etc.) would work fine. (made in Photoshop by myself)

Example #3: Scatter plot

Scatter plot. Overlapping points seem perfectly visible because of contours. When we have contours, black colour probably works the best. If another category of values would be added, I would suggest different shapes — crosses for example. See how grid lines nicely “close” the graph into coherent whole even though no additional axes are used. (made in Photoshop by myself)
