5 key traits that will make you attractive to any employer — “Be genuinely interested in people”

Next to being yourself and being resilient, a third important trait will ensure that you become attractive to any employer: a genuine interest in the people around you.

In the changing working environment, where hierarchies become less important and teamwork plays a significant role in any project, the capability to build a strong network and to influence effectively throughout the organisation is the key to success.

In order to build that network, you need to build relationships of trust, not only with your direct reports but with basically everyone in the organisation. Establishing trust is not easy, you need to get to know your co-workers, you need to know who they are as people and what they are interested in, not just what they can do for you.

Chances are that when you show an interest in others and the things that are important to them, they will show an interest in you and the things that are important to you.

To some people, developing strong interpersonal relationships is inherent to their personality. For others, it takes a little more effort but with a few little tricks, you can show your genuine interest in the people around you.

· Use someone’s name

Dale Carnegie wrote in his book ‘how to win friends and influence people’: “if you want to win friends, make it a point to remember them. If you remember my name, you pay me a subtle compliment, you indicate that I have made an impression on you. Remember my name and you add to my feeling of importance”

Make it a habit to address people with their first name, be it written or verbal, first time or repeated.

· Listen with interest

Let’s be honest, no one likes to talk to a person who checks his smartphone at the same time. Give people your full attention when you are talking to them. Make them feel that you are truly interested in what they have to say and that they have your undevoted attention.

· Encourage people

Everyone likes a compliment or some encouraging remarks. It lifts the spirit, it enhances self-confidence and will fuel motivation. Make sure that when you talk to people, you use some simple words of encouragement.

Regardless of the brilliant products or the financial assets an organisation may have, it is the people who make it successful. They are the key assets of any organisation and getting to genuinely know them should be as high a priority as getting to know the technical aspects of your job. In the end, the relationships that you build will prove to be your key to success.

I look forward to hearing from you,

Isabel
