Project: Data Governance for a Utilities Company.

Cluttered data management can reduce productivity.

Understanding the Problem

Large companies have large amounts of data, and this data needs to be managed and maintained. Not only do large companies have to think about internal data, they also keep track of their customer’s data. This composes a challenge for the organization.

For a utilities company, focusing on electricity, these are all crucial aspects of their business. For such a company, data could reach up to billions. A single customer would need an address, an account holder’s name, etc. So imagine having all of this data stored and managed in a legacy system, it would be a tedious process for the internal team to ensure the quality of the millions of records they are responsible for.

The Product

From the usual legacy systems, we were brought in to help the company transform their Information Technology department, data governance processes by implementing data monitoring tools, robotic process automation tools, and user interfaces for maintaining and validating existing data. These transformations were from CRM integration, to make customer data available to the company’s other business departments and units, to helping the company with more advanced customer service integrations like a chat box service to name one. We developed a system where the company can leverage artificial intelligence, machine learning and notifications. This allows the system to verify the data of their customers and users, and detects defects, and correct missing and inaccurate information.

Apart from customer related integrations, the digital transformation also involves how the company keeps track of their internal data. The transformation promotes a more self-serviced oriented environment between the employees and the company.

Several projects and integration are still being improved through this digital transformation, most notably the integration of their engineering database. Repairs, customer service, and fielding technicians can now be more efficient as stats about what’s needed, like type of service and equipment is now more accessible across different departments. Overall, the digital transformation, and the data governance of this utilities company makes their daily operations more efficient with all the accessibility and analytics shown all in one integrated system.

How We Made It

We worked with the company heavily involved in the process of developing the product. There were a series of client calls and our developers had to fly in and out of the city to meet with the company’s technical team. The IT Department of the client was heavily involved in the decision making to make this solution happen. The digital transformation of their legacy systems was through the REST API type systems. The client utilizes cloud based services to improve efficiency and reduce costs.

The Impact

The transformation promotes a more self-serviced oriented environment between the employees and the company.

The digital transformation, and the data governance of this utilities company makes their daily operations more efficient.

The digital transformation of the client’s legacy systems helped with their data accuracy. As of the moment, the organization has reached about 90% data accuracy across the organization’s different departments.

Although, further improvements can be done for when it comes to the data governance of the organization, the spike in data accuracy of the organization is at an all time high.
