Demystifying GitHub

$ git begin

It was on a Saturday morning, 10th February 2018. The event venue was ready and set like heaven waiting for the trumpet to sound and usher in the congregation of developers ready to dine with their (master branch) master.

The event was cosponsored by Ingressive an African company connecting promising African startups with foreign investors. and GitHub ( a web-based hosting service for version control using git.).

This Organizations empowered ambassadors across campuses in Africa, shoutout to Adewale Abati ♠ and this was their maiden edition at The University of Port Harcourt (Also known as Uniport). This event is hosted by The Uniport Ingressive Ambassadors.

which includes myself Ray The Nerd, Umesi Obusor Ezekiel and @Obinna Odirionye .

Alas the sound of the trumpet was heard at the stipulated 10:am time as Port Harcourt based developers and aspiring developers walked into the venue to answer present to their names.

The event started with a talk from the first speaker, Umesi Obusor Ezekiel where he talked about the introduction to Github.

One of the highlights of his talk was when he cracked us up by saying some developers might think Java is a short form of JavaScript LOL.

Immediately after Umesi Obusor Ezekiel’s talk, it was time for the second speaker AYAOSI GODFREY co-lead Gdg Ph who spoke on the topic “Why GitHub?” where he highlighted the benefits and uses of GitHub.

It was insightful, and paved way to the third speaker, Arerosuoghene Wisdom Ceo / Founder Rudigo who gave a detailed talk on the theme “Git As a Tool for Version Control”.

After the third speaker, came time for a break. During the break we played a very interesting game. Two teams were formed, one at the left flank, the other at the right. They all battled for which team was the smarter as they try to uncover the write answer to a set of given clues.

After this game, came time for refreshment, drinks and snacks. And oh! Did I forget to mention that the winners of the game went away with lots of swags? Kudos to our sponsors, Ingressive and GitHub

After the break came time to hear from our 2 remaining speakers Vaughn E. Itemuagbor and @Obinna Odirionye

Mr Vaughn E. Itemuagbor CEO/ co-founder Snapilaps / CEO Irokoweb inc handled quite an interesting session.

It was more like a motivational sessional, as he told us stories and personal experiences that were really inspiring. My favourite message from him, and something I won’t forget anytime soon, was when he said, and I paraphrase. A team is a developers most powerful asset. His session was really informative, and above all inspiring.

Immediately after his, came time for the last speaker and also one of the ambassadors, Obinna. It featured a live coding session on Github tools. Where people interactively asked their questions and got answers via a live chat app built by @Obinna for the event. The participants asked lots of interesting questions until they were all satisfied.

The event had myself @Rayscode introduce the audience to Code Club, a community of developers and aspiring developers around the university of Port Harcourt, turning the University and City into a Silicon Valley in the South-South. Guest like Precious Chukwunda Ceo of Unicorn.ng introduced the audience to Tech PH a community of communities and individuals in the Port Harcourt tech ecosystem.

In all the participants were very satisfied and were proud of the ambassadors and grateful to the organizers for sponsoring this event.

They expressed joy that the university of Port Harcourt was having an active tech community, one that can compete everywhere else.

The event stayed true to its theme, as truly Github was demystified.
