On 14th of September the Ingressive Campus ambassadors, university of Uyo held an event, with what I would consider a catchy theme, Learning by building(the growth paradigm)

That up there was what the whole event revolved around, designing and building projects.

I started the event with an introduction to what we want to accomplish as can be seen in the preceding image, and why we are doing it. Thereafter we (facilitators) worked the attendees through creating an account with openweathermap and Github and generating an API key from openweathermap.

After this process we were ready to split ourselves into groups we had five different groups targeting different areas of technology. We had Design, web front-end, web backend, native mobile(Andriod) and hybrid mobile(React native).

The designers facilitated by Joshua Okoro exceeded our expectations and designed something way out of the box, this was because there was only one complete beginner who would be doing this for the first time. They decided to show her how to design practically. Here is the design.

The Frontend Web developers were exceptional, they completed the weather app and even deployed, this group was facilitated by Emund Ekott, a good frontend developer. Here is a link to their work if you want to try it out https://weatherlify.netlify.com

The backend group was a complete disaster, it was facilitated by myself, we were supposed to make an API to output jokes with creating and read functionality only, but it wasn’t successful. There were only a few attendees interested in backend and they were complete beginners, with me struggling to keep up with the organization, we didn’t go far.

Enter the mobile guys

The mobile development groups were separated into Native(Andriod) and hybrid(React Native) both facilitated by Samfield Hawb Bassey and Ochu Princewill respectively and they both had the same task as the frontend web which is to develop a weather app.

The Native android devs did not get the project to completion but they were able to go far enough, if you feel like diving into the code, you can do that here on GitHub. The hybrid mobile developers did complete theirs and also deployed, you can check it out here.

Where to go from here, package

We had to break the coding session because I had thought of a way learners could practice more and the codersinhood community came to mind. We had a call from the founder, Vasile Cojusco, where he introduced the community and how it can help learners from all around the world grow. This was an important part for me because I hope both beginning and intermediate developers who needed the support can harness this community for growth.

Questions and Answers

After this, we entered into a long period of questions and answers. It was quite insightful, it was open to everyone, anyone could answer and anyone could ask. But the facilitators and ICAs were there to guide the process.

Conclusion

I am grateful to everyone that contributed to the success of this event, and I sincerely hope we can build upon this knowledge, and create a more progressive platform for growth. Thank you to the ingressive community university of Uyo and the ingressive community at large, and to everyone that contributed, you are appreciated. Let’s keep on impacting Africa one step at a time, with our skill and our unmatched commitment.
