INTRODUCTION TO UI/UX USING FIGMA

As the saying goes that two heads are better than one and learning never stops as we learn new things each and everyday, 11th of August 2018 marks another great day where tech enthusiasts gather at the Ingressive Campus Community meet-up held in Federal University of Technology Minna, Niger State to share knowledge and ideas and also to promote the use of tech by various individuals in the school. They gathered to share ideas on how to design using FIGMA.

The meet up started at about 10:30am and Muhammad Aliyu, co-lead FUTMX DEVELOPER CIRCLE starts by introducing the participants to the INGRESSIVE COMMUNITY, where he said that “Ingressive is a tech firm that believe in the potential of African youths and have been working tirelessly to promote tech ecosystem in Africa”, he further enlightened them on the importance of being a member of a developers’ community.

He also spoke on “INTRODUCTION TO FIGMA” where he explained the general over view of a figma and he defined Figma to be a free, online UI tool where you can design, collaborate, prototype and handoff all in the same place. He also show some demo of figma design, the pros of using figma to other designs softwares and encouraged the audience to make best of the opportunities and functionalities of figma.

The next speaker Mohammad Abdullahi Ogirima a Brand identity designer, gave an exciting presentation on BETTER UI/UX. He talk more on the uses of figma and also gave a detailed explanation of wire framing, user interface and user experience where explained what they meant, their importance, the common types of UI, Qualities of a Good user experience. He also helped to distinguish between UI and UX and pointed factors to be considered before one go into the design phase, the bad practices and how to make amends.

It was getting interesting participants are already falling in love with design as we have another techie Bright C. Emeka founder the http://thecreativeschronicles.com, gave an exciting experience by showing attendees the practical aspect of designing using figma. He showed how to incorporate the good qualities of UI and UX designs and avoid bad practices. The hands-on session aim at designing an homepage, He guided attendees through the design process as all hands were on respective laptops.

It was Q/A section where questions were asked based on things that have been discussed since the beginning of the meet up to know if people are actually following. Winners were rewarded with gifts.

Our last speaker was Nnamdi Okoro the Community Manager, Minna Tech. Meetup. spoke on prototyping and some demonstration of prototype, where he said prototyping is the way to find what doesn’t work early and cheap, and spend your time and money on solutions that do work and the importance of prototyping in designs and showed the difference between designs with prototype and without prototype. While this section is on refreshments is running in background, He also spoke on the paper prototyping which involves sketching and digital prototyping where he made a list of the materials needed for paper prototyping, their uses and when to use them. He wrapped up his presentation with the demonstration.

It was a concatenation of developers and designers where there is avenue for Dev. to meet designer and using figma for easy collaboration. It was really an exciting, informative function full of developers sharing undiluted knowledge. Everyone was sure to have learnt something new.

The session ended at 2:30pm and attendees left with smiles on their faces and with the awesome Ingressive swags, towards the end of the meet up and were urged to go practive what they’ve learnt and build great designs! Then, ofcourse! there was group photos.
