To create a more “emphatic” region, we re-imagined the area with our designs in Alexandra Road Estate.
Alexandra Road Estate is located in Camden region which hosts diverse ranges of animal and plant species.
This project is focused on native plants, birds and hedgehogs to create a safe space for them in urban life.

Nest Area

In Camden region, lots of bird species exist, such as blackbirds and moorhen; besides, more specialist species exist too; for instance, peregrine falcons. Peregrine falcons usually nest on tall buildings, but urban living can be dangerous for them. This project provide safe, comfort area for birds with corten steel structure on roofs. At these structures they can nest, roost and achieve food and water.

In green terrace, people can sit and feed birds from behind the glass wall which looks opaque in birds’ side, so that birds cannot afraid and feel safe.

Also studies show that birds perch easier in rough surface. Inner perch areas provide that comfortnes with emery corten steel sticks.

Hedgehog Pools

For the hedgehogs living here, there is a pool with a pathway in it for them to safely cross the road and walk around feeling safe and in their own habitat. They like bushy and moist places so there are some plants in the end of these pathways where they can stop by and hide underneath. Hedgehogs also like swimming so
there is an inclined platform where they can climb to pool level for swimming and a ramp to use to get out of the pool.

Hedgehog Paths and Homes

There are a lot of hedgehogs in the area we deal with. These animals cannot adapt to city life and have difficulty due to their timid nature. In order to help hedgehogs, a living space under the ground, which was made by hand, but where they would feel the natural environment, was discussed. In addition, these nests are connected to the buildings in the region with a passage. Thanks to this passage, both people can feed the hedgehogs and the hedgehogs can climb to the ground surface and participate in the forest life outside.

Miyawaki Forest

557 native plants or flora species are reported in Camden. Some of them are endangered, such as White flowered Wax plant, Camden White Gum and Brown Pomaderris.
In this project, a part of the buildings are used for afforestation by Miyawaki method. This method provides growing urban forest within a short span of 20.30 years.

Platform

The platform was built in order to give opportunity for people to be able to meer with each other and watch the landscape from top view.

By using the platform, the scare of hedgehogs based on human is become minimized.

The platform is contributed from elevation differences and at the above floor, the road finishes with sitting places at which people can feed the birds that have houses on the roofs.
