WTF is product strategy, really?

What actually is Product Strategy? If you’ve been in the industry a while, you may have heard the term thrown around, whether or not it was used in a correct fashion (to be honest, we could debate if there’s a canonical way of using the term at all!). And if you’re lucky, you may have even seen elements of product strategy it in action, or at least seen it on some slides.

First, let’s clear up some ambiguity and look at what isn’t a product strategy. It’s not a:

  • Roadmap
  • Feature list
  • Backlog
  • Mock-up
  • Goal
  • Vision
  • Slideware

And one thing is for sure, its likely not a 100-page product requirements document either! So if thats what you are working on right now, put the pen/keyboard down, there is likely a faster, smarter, and more impactful way — especially if you are planning on building a product from scratch.
