What’s Holding Us Back

For people with MH issues, it’s complicated

People with depression, what is holding you back? What do you wish you could change so you could get better?

I wholly admit that I laughed when I read the question. You’re asking people with an illness what is holding them back? Perhaps the illness? And then you ask what we’d change? PERHAPS THE ILLNESS?

I don’t mean to be rude, but I do want to note that questions like this trivializes our illness. Would you ask someone with cancer this question? No, I think not.

*inhales, exhales* Now I will answer your question. These are the following not-us reasons why we are ‘held back’:

  • the stigma associated with mental illness
  • people who don’t understand that it’s a legitimate illness and ask us why we can’t just snap out of it/think positive thoughts/try this vitamin supplement/understand that we have so much to live for
  • a society that labels us as ‘less’
  • the medical system that makes medication and therapy not readily accessible for everyone, to include the lack of resources (in my mid-sized town, there are not enough therapists for everyone who needs help and it takes forever to get in with one if you can find one taking new patients, and this has a lot to do with how difficult it is for the therapists to bill insurance)
  • mainstream media that feeds the fears of non-mentally ill people that anyone with mental illness must be dangerous

These are the top five. So help us help ourselves and work towards bettering these things that are in your control, so that we can work on the parts that are in ours.
