These two abbreviations are used all the time. What is the difference?

E.g. stands for exempli gratia and means “for example.”

Example: I’m going to the store to buy a bunch of ingredients (e.g. turkey, potatoes and corn) for my Thanksgiving meal.

I.e. is the abbreviation for id est and means “in other words.”

Example: Baking is a serious business in my house during Thanksgiving week — i.e. we basically have a family Great British Bake Off.
