Close Your Eyes

A short poem about a life longing for security

I missed beauty
When I was underneath
I sailed past without looking in its direction

It's not that it wasn’t there
But I couldn’t see it through the fog
Dark and doldrom.

When I peeked out from my cocoon
I only saw creepy figures
Haunting the mist
Scary scenes startled me back into my hole

I peeked out less and less
Weeks went by and my eyes were closed.

When beauty was just inches from my eyelids
I squeezed them shut
Afraid of what the beauty might obscure.
