We were aware of a recent conversation on Twitter about the allegedly low rate that we offered to translators. Here’s our official statement on this subject:

When setting up INKR a year ago, we knew that we would have to translate and localize many content that we licensed — while a lot of the titles were already in English, some was still in their local languages.

In May 2020, to test out our localization workflows and in-house localization software, we started recruiting translators.

With no prior experience, we initially offered translators $0.01 per character for JP-EN translation work and quickly realized that it was way below the expectation of translators.

We have since revised our initial offers and payment calculation to make sure it was fair for all of our translators. Our payouts to translators have since been on par with the industry average.

Our goal has always been about making more comics available to readers worldwide, and as part of that mission, we created INKR Localize — a specialized software meant to make the process of localizing comics much faster and easier by automating most of the mundane activities, so that the translators and typesetters can focus on what they do best.

Here’s a short video of INKR Localize in action:

We understand that we are still very new at this and there’s a lot of rooms for improvements in everything we do. We are grateful for all the feedback so that we can continue to learn, improve, and make more and more comics available to everyone.

Thank you,

The INKR Team
