Gideon opened his eyes, narrowed into slits from the sunlight that streamed through the large floor-to-ceiling windows. The palm and orange trees, a cluster of which were along the back of the house, was a world away from the tall, stately pine trees of the Northwest sector of the United American Empire, and his old life with Eloise.
