Show Notes from this episode with Jess Dewell of Red Direction

  • If you want to make an impact right in the present moment, learn to make the thing you see in front of you your favourite thing.
  • Give your best in whatever you are doing. If you can’t be all in, then you shouldn’t be doing it.
  • There is always a sense of accomplishment that comes from doing something we are scared of doing, even if we choose not to do it because we made a choice.
  • It’s really important to understand how you, as well as other people you are working with, are making decisions. Even if you don’t know fully, you need to be able to understand the motivation behind the way they are making decisions.
  • Keep in mind what really matters when working as a team.
  • The more you are aware when making choices, the better you can go forward.
  • You don’t always have to make a decision right away, especially if it’s something that could impact your vision. You can choose not to decide at that moment, but you have to recognise what it is.
  • Devise a way to keep all your ideas that need evaluation or those that don’t need an immediate answer. Time is always on your side for that, and sometimes, time is the best answer.
  • A business is like a kaleidoscope with different colourful pieces that are unique.
  • What got you to where you are is really important.
  • There’s good stuff in any success. Think about all the new things you can add to those things to leverage your success.
  • To be successful, you have to have 2 things — arrogance and ignorance. Sometimes it’s better to NOT know that we’re not supposed to be able to do something.
  • The more dynamic you can be, the better off you will be.
  • Think about the stories you tell yourself and identify those that you see as weaknesses or threats so that you can identify your assumptions and start to breakthrough.
  • Create your dynamic SWOT and make sure that it matches your 5-year plan. Start thinking about how you can be successful in your current SWOT.
  • It’s important for every entrepreneur to reflect on themselves and see their own successes and failures.
  • We set up our own luck by the actions we take.
  • It’s always going to be noisy. Developing a learned curiosity about what is here right now is key to understanding which of our personas are showing up.
  • Practicing the art of stillness and getting to it quickly is something that could help us understand how our filters must be calibrated for what we take forward for us.
  • We share curiosity. You can be curious about anything you want to be curious about, and not what other people think you should be.

The Buzz — Our Innovation Round

  1. #1 thing to be more innovative — Slow down. Do a present retreat. Spend time to reflect, assess, be thoughtful about what is a priority now and later.
  2. Best thing for new ideas — Doing things that are not related to what I do — reading, playing the flute, drinking tea, doing puzzles, being with nature.
  3. Favourite tool for innovation — Nature and sticky notes.
  4. Keep project/client on track — Present retreat, held in accountability by your dynamic SWOT and the goals that you have set.
  5. Differentiate — Play more. Let go more and be a little less serious. Playfulness allows thoughts to come through you.
