Seminole campus Hosts Jazz Concert

Tampa Bay jazz band O Som Do Jazz played the debut of the Jazz in the Stacks event at St. Petersburg College Seminole campus on April 22nd thanks to librarian Chad Mairn and the Friends of the Seminole Community Library.

O Som Do Jazz, which means “the sound of jazz” in Portuguese, brings back the sound of Brazillian bossa nova and samba jazz from the 1960s. The band is headlined by Andrea Moraes-Manson, and Dr. David Manson, a founding developer in the Music Industry and Recording Arts program at St. Petersburg College. O Som Do Jazz last played Jazz in the Stacks in 2013 at the Gibbs campus library. The band played to a packed house in the library program room, perhaps not in the stacks, but definitely stacks adjacent. In addition to old standards like “Carioca”, the band tried out some new material for the evening’s audience. They closed the evening with “Cinnamon and Clove,” and a heartfelt thanks to SPC librarian Chad Mairn and the Friends of the Seminole Community Library. Jazz in the Stacks is held in April every year in honor of Jazz Appreciation Month. It was created by the Smithsonian National Museum of American History, and signed into law by President George W. Bush in 2003. Jazz Appreciation Month was created to encourage special programs in schools, colleges, libraries and museums to present programs on jazz and its role in America’s cultural history.
