2023 was the year of LLMs in which we were able to speak with AI by using natural language commands.

2024 may be remembered as the year for Large Action Models (LAMs), and AI Robots to transfer our experience to the physical world while getting things done.

The AI Future is About Being a Pilot, not a Mechanic

It is like driving a high-performance car. Most people know how to drive a car and yet there are a limited number of mechanics. Now, creating a product requires us to be mechanics, and thanks to AI, we will all drive the machine to take us to the desired destination. We will all become pilots.

AI is taking big strides toward Humanoid robots thanks to AI pioneers in the field such as Figure 1 and Tesla.

Tesla made significant progress with its Optimus robot in just a year from a hardly walking robot to a dancing one with the ability to move eggs.

Samsung launched at CES 2024 its AI robot, Ballie, (not humanoid) as a home assistant performing tasks such as controlling home appliances and serving as a projector on any wall.

The announcement that created the most buzz came from the humanoid robot company, Figure.

The model Figure 1 can make coffee while making adjustments. What’s fascinating is Figure 1 learned this ability by observing humans.

According to the founder, Brett Adcock, who founded two technology companies, Archer ($2.7 billion IPO) and Vettery ($100M exit), this is the master plan of Figure AI:

Build a feature-complete electromechanical humanoid.
Perform human-like manipulation.
Integrate humanoids into the labor force.

Workable humanoid technology is on the horizon. This opportunity will attract more investment in 2024 and create significant progress by the end of the year.

Rabbit most certainly created a buzz within the tech world giving the signs of the first big AI Device launch.

Even though Rabbits will not be for sale until March 2024, it already sold out 10,000 pre-orders on its first day at a price point of $199.

Rabbit most certainly has a point reflecting light on the new concept of AI devices using Large Action Models (LAMs).

Rabbit will be able to intuitively integrate all the apps and implement tasks (action) such as ordering food from Uber Eats, booking a flat from Airbnb or making complex scheduling that requires multiple app uses.

However, having a standalone AI device while not serving as a phone brings much friction for product market fit.

At this point, Apple, Samsung, Google other phone makers should be discussing the concept of bringing LAMs to their next phones.

Therefore, users wouldn’t need to buy another device and use the LAM as software within their phones.

If they don’t, then, someone else, so, we’d assume they would bring the AI Phone concept for their next launch.

Especially, Apple as the biggest phone maker brand can make use of the opportunity since the iPhone 15 didn’t surprise customers with innovative features and AiPhones could bring back the excitement for their keynotes.

CES, the world’s largest technology show, took place in Las Vegas on January 9–12 saturated with the word AI in presentations of the largest tech companies as well as startups.
