Louis Szekely was born in Washington D.C., on September 12, 1967. He was the only child to Mary Louise (Szekely), an American of Hungarian descent, and Luis Szekely, who worked as a biochemist before becoming an economist at the World Bank. His parents moved on from the marriage when he was a child and his mother took him to Newton, Massachusetts where she worked as a schoolteacher for Louis’ younger brother and sister. During this period, Mary Louise became an alcoholic and had difficulty raising her children.
