Supporting the movement for social and economic equity
The new Alliance for Boys and Men of Color (BMOC) is the latest website to launch under PolicyLink’s federated network. The Alliance for BMOC community, which is dedicated to improving the lives of California’s boys and men of color, is part of PolicyLink’s broader movement to advance economic and social equity through research and action.
In the US, men and boys of color confront a fierce cycle of poverty, low-quality education and scarce work opportunities that limits paths to success. Meanwhile, violence and the incarceration epidemic continue to add to these issues. Public health experts recognize that these challenges are perpetuated by the combined effect of personal, social, environmental and political factors. Studies show that influencing these factors, especially at the systems-level, is integral to improving health and life outcomes for disadvantaged groups. In short, no single program can tackle these issues — it takes a movement.
Under the umbrella of PolicyLink, Alliance for BMOC is building a coalition to take action and raise awareness of the challenges facing boys and men of color. The new site provides a digital hub for practitioners to share resources and best practices. These communities participate in policy workgroups, state and local campaigns and develop the connections that form the Alliance for BMOC coalition.
One of the key challenges in our work with PolicyLink was to create a digital platform through which their staff could easily add to their network of communities taking action on critical issues. The Alliance for BMOC is the first site in the new network to be independently launched by PolicyLink staff. The site represents an important milestone in our partnership with PolicyLink and we are proud to support their mission to build the movement for social and economic equity.
