Just a spec of dust within the galaxy
Becoming the star
As the title goes…, we’re just a spec of dust within the galaxy. There’re so many elements, substances, particles required to be a star. Being a thoughtful doctor is the same. Despite the knowledge that one would have to spend more than a life time to learn it all, there’re the “art” and “heart” part to it. Knowing diseases doesn’t have the same meaning as knowing the patient. What do you think is more important?? The patients, of course. It’s easy to say if I put it in a simple sentence like that, but once a medical student or even the most experienced doctor got drown in diseases… they might not have the time to look up and think .. I’m treating a person, not some abnormal lab results.
I used a padlet to create a platform for my residents to share their experiences that they went a bit “out of the textbook” and they glad they did that. I do think that it takes time for them to take a step back and evaluate the experience. They get to learn from others experiences as well and these are pure gold for learning. It would be so alive and emotional if it was a conference, when I come to think about it. Maybe next time, then.
Experiences and patients are always our teacher. Little by little, I do hope that a spec of dust will , one day.. become a star.
