It’s now been a year since we announced the launch of our latest and largest fund — renewing our commitment to work alongside another generation of exceptional founders for at least another decade. Throughout our journey building Inovia, we’ve watched startup ecosystems across North America flourish in unprecedented ways, especially here on our own home turf of Montreal. Inovia portfolio companies such as AppDirect, Lightspeed, Luxury Retreats and others have built large, prosperous businesses and helped foster technology careers for thousands of highly skilled people. The bilingual city ranks second among North American cities for the number of university students per capita and has recently gained a lot of attention for its leading role in deep learning research. Together we are giving the city a respected, dynamic foundation for generations of technology startups.

Building on this momentum, we’re looking to grow our investment team with the addition of a full-time analyst in our Montreal office. Here is what the role involves:

  • Listening to pitches and building relationships with early stage company founders to uncover potential new investments;
  • Conducting research to develop new investment themes and writing investment memos;
  • Assessing the attractiveness of investment opportunities based on qualitative and quantitative metrics and conducting due diligence on new investments (including: researching competitive landscapes, building financial models, and running diligence calls);
  • Representing Inovia at industry events, conferences and networking activities;
  • Preparing presentations and analysis to lead internal or ad-hoc projects with existing Inovia portfolio companies alongside the Inovia lead partner; and
  • Experimenting with ways to add insight, efficiency, and scale to internal processes of the firm. Inovia is still a startup — we will encourage you to create and execute on your own projects that will have a long-lasting impact on the Inovia team, and our community of founders and investors.

To succeed at Inovia, you will need to be relentlessly curious, inherently resourceful and a strong relationship-builder. And here are some of the other qualities we look for as we build our team:

  • Has spent time in Montreal and ideally graduated with a technical degree (CS, Engineering, Science, Math, or Economics);
  • Understands how to read financial statements and to build a model but also how to extrapolate narratives from large sets of incomplete qualitative and quantitative data;
  • Does a full market assessment before buying any product — has a perspective on what makes a product, a company or an industry great;
  • Is able to run and deliver a project with minimal supervision;
  • Has worked at a startup (bonus points!) or dreams of doing so in a couple of years;
  • Enjoys the idea of living in Montreal and is willing to sacrifice evenings and weekends giving back to the local startup ecosystem;
  • Peut-être que tu parles français (it’s ok if you don’t);
  • Without being told, implements a new CRM for the team because the current one was just too inefficient; and
  • Is not a “Know-it-All”, but rather a “Learn-it-All”.

All interested applicants can submit a resume, a cover letter and links to external profiles (Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, AngelList, Github, your personal blog, etc) to build@inovia.vc prior to February 5th, 2017. Your cover letter shouldn’t be longer than one page and should answer the following questions:

  • What’s the most promising seed-stage startup you’ve seen and why? What makes it promising, and what are the risks?
  • If you could lead a project to improve how a VC fund works from the inside, what would it be? How would you structure the project?

We recognize how important every person is in a small team, and you’ll have a chance to talk with every person you’ll work with at Inovia during the interview process. We encourage any interested candidates to check out our team, portfolio and blog before reaching out to us. We look forward to hearing from you and meeting the next Inovian!
