Shutting Down the External Website of Inside Blogging

And transitioning to the next thing…

When I decided to build the external website of inside Blogging, it was out of a simple reason: the road on Medium, both for writers and editors, it’s a dead end.

Medium is great as a community and for certain aspects, but only a tiny group of special profiles can make it on Medium. Anything outside the pop editorial line of Medium — unless outstanding or trendy — is just doomed to invisibility.

Actually, the external website contained only articles from me. To make it a collaborative place would require plenty of extra energies. But, for the collaborative part, the Medium publication already does its job, and the truth is that we want to collaborate and read each other on Medium, inside our preferred writing community.

Also, newsletters from Medium, instead of improving with time, made a step back, and there’s no way of doing without, since all emails are in the hands of Medium. Keeping a duplicate external newsletter can be annoying for readers and not the best solution in the case of a small publication.

However, I’m still convinced that writers need a presence outside Medium.

So, I’ve decided to transition from the external website (which will be closed in the next weeks) into a personal website, which it already was in fact, with a different brand (Vico XL, and it would be great to have your feedback on it and, hopefully, your subscription), keeping it separated from the unique inside Blogging on Medium.

Nothing changes for inside Blogging on Medium. I’m still committed to it, I’ll publish on it, and I’d still welcome any writer willing to contribute with valuable content. I’m still convinced that this publication can be a special resource for anyone wanting to read about blogging out of the mainstream.

This is a collaborative place that can help writers to peep a little outside invisibility and give readers a publication with good curation. Someway, we love Medium and we still need it, even if we’re fully aware of its shortcomings.

Many of us will need external websites, like me, but republishing here is a plus, especially since you can publish publicly outside — for your personal audience and for Google — and republish for members here. At the same time, for many others, Medium is still their preferred, and maybe only, writing home. So, there’s room for everyone.

The new road is, for me, the next step in my writing presence outside Medium, and, for all, an improved focus on inside Blogging as Medium publication.
