In 2012, Detroit lacked a space where Detroit-based entrepreneurs could work full time on alternative, market proven solutions to civic and social issues that affect our community. We needed a bold alternative to the tech incubators and commerce-focused business accelerators, where socially-innovative leaders could focus on intervening in the civic and community challenges facing our city.

How Dandelion Helped

From its very early stages, Dandelion co-developed the concept of the Department of Alternatives. We partnered with the new owner of the Claridge House in downtown Detroit, and played a critical role in activating a 6,000 square-foot space on the second floor of the building into a planning and deployment space for social entrepreneurs.

Partnering with the new owners of the Claridge House building, Dandelion co-developed the concept for the Department of Alternatives. Seeking to activate an underutilized area on the building’s second floor, the Department secured grant funding and transformed a 6,000 square-foot space into a dynamic planning and deployment zone for social entrepreneurs.

Locating the Department in the Central Business District put us in proximity to civic and business leaders, giving entrepreneurs access to advocate for the most viable alternative solutions to help create a more durable Detroit. Dandelion identified and drew in the Department’s charter members, and established the founding board.

Our team designed the Department’s branding and collateral materials to clearly convey the tone and message of this collective of individuals who lifestyles revolve around social change and civic innovation.
