Job Shadowing @mytaxi
What Abby learned by shadowing Barbara
They say you have to walk a mile in someone’s shoes to really understand them. Our Job Shadowing program does exactly that: Every three months we publish three new opportunities for colleagues to shadow another colleague from a different department to learn aspects related to the job, mytaxi and new competencies. Overall, it is a great way to connect colleagues at mytaxi!
Read all about what our colleague Abby learned by shadowing our General Manager Barbara from Italy.
Getting up at 4am isn’t so bad when you’re jet setting off to Milan for 2 days! From the get go I knew I was in for a busy couple of days as Barbara notified me that we would spend one day in Milan and the second day in Torino. The moment I walked into the Milan office, I was greeted with an Italian style coffee (literally a shot of coffee)! I must admit that it was definitely the best coffee I’ve ever had — even better than the good old New Zealand coffee! I had no idea what to expect when job shadowing the General Manager of Italy, other than the mere fact that it would be hectic!
What have you learned that you did not expect?
To begin with, there are 4 offices in Italy, which are spread out across the country. This brought up my first question to Barbara, “How does she manage four offices throughout one day?” Being the super woman that she is, Barbara frequently has zoom calls with employees in all of her offices. Within the first hour, we had already been on 2 different calls, one for marketing and one for operations. Communication is key for Barbara’s day-to-day life at mytaxi.
Give one reason why and why not you would like to change with your colleague
I would LOVE to switch roles with Barbara (one day after I have some more experience)! Not only does traveling all around the beautiful Italian lands (and Europe!) sound appealing, but she is always kept on her toes with new challenges. As crazy as it sounds, I love the idea of walking into work knowing I have heaps of challenges to face and resolve. You never know how your day will pan out, but Barbara was . always so calm and collected. Definitely a skill I want to master! The only reason I wouldn’t want to switch roles with Barbara is the fact that I can’t speak Italian…
What impressed you the most during job shadowing?
On our second day while we were traveling back from Torino, I was curious to find out how Barbara became the General Manager for mytaxi Italy. Not only has her career been impressive, but her accomplishments and the way she drives the Italian offices were truly inspiring to me. She has a strong relationship with every single team member, despite different locations, and she radiates positive vibes.
It also amazed me that not only Barbara, but everyone in the office/zoom calls could flick from Italian to English in the blink of an eye!
As a female in such a powerful role, Barbara is very inspiring to me and I’m really motivated to set myself even higher career goals now and smash them! This is definitely an experience I will never forget!
