2019 has been a very exciting year for us. We launched new cities, new service types and got more people from A to B than ever before. Now it’s time to take a step back and review the past months.
The year started with a big announcement: Our parent company Daimler joined forces with BMW to create a mobility joint venture including ride-hailing, carsharing, parking and charging solutions. The so-called NOW family plans to make mobility as easy and frictionless as possible.
The celebration continued in Summer when we turned ten years old and rebranded from mytaxi to FREE NOW. Still wondering why? We answered all the questions you had in a blog post.
One of the most exciting challenges was the introduction of new fleet types. In Poland, Spain and Portugal, we launched Lite, which is a taxi service with cheaper conditions and upfront pricing. Over the year, LITE became one of our most popular fleet types.
Right after rebranding in Summer we launched Ride in Germany and expanded it to six cities across the country, including Hamburg, Berlin, Frankfurt and Cologne. Ride is basically a chauffeur-service with fewer regulations than taxis, which makes it a bit cheaper without losing its convenience. Adding Ride to our FREE NOW app was not only a big achievement for our team but a big step for the company itself.
Thanks to this innovation, we are looking back at FREE NOW’s most successful year ever. In Germany alone, we completed over 14 million tours. Our drivers in Ireland were also pretty successful, finishing 13.5 million tours within 2019.
This would not have been achieved without 100.000 taxi drivers, the root of our business. Taxi remains the most popular choice among our users and is genuinely loved for its speed, reliability and the local expertise of our drivers.
Aside from these, we have also integrated Hive, our E-Scooter brand, into the FREE NOW app in Poland, Austria, Portugal and Italy. As the excitement for micro-mobility does not seem to be stopping, we also launched E-Bikes to give you a wider choice of how to get from A to B. We’re planning to expand into more cities this year, so keep your eyes open for our green scooters and e-bikes.
We’re super excited about what 2020 will bring us and how the industry will evolve within the coming months.
