We Are the Champions

The history of the Intramural Championship t-shirt.

--

The coveted intramural champion shirt is one of the most sought-after articles of clothing at The University of Texas at Austin. Each year thousands of participants compete in over 30 different events for the honor of claiming bragging rights and their piece of UT history.

Along with their photo on the Intramural Wall of Fame, students understand the long tradition of wearing their champ shirt on campus to let all know that they too have joined the ranks of intramural champions.

But that has not always been the case on the UT campus.
Prior to the 1975–76 year, winning a competition meant a wall of fame photo, earning points for your team, possible individual awards for sportsmanship and best all-around athlete.

Senior managers were also awarded a “T” letter through the 1979–80 school year.

Now approaching its 50th anniversary, the intramural champion t-shirt remains one of the most sought-after pieces of clothing at UT.
