Shane’s Take — Last Argument of Kings
The final novel of The First Law trilogy brings the story to an amazing climax. I wasn’t sure how all of the pieces would come together, and this book surpassed anything I could have expected. There is so much action in this one as the Union forces have to deal with the threat in the north as well as a siege by forces from the south. All of this serves as the backdrop for a big change in the throne and a lot of political intrigue.
More than the prior books, this shows that the protagonists that we’ve come to know and love aren’t perfect. I love the depth of the characters and the struggles they face to stay on the path of “good”. It becomes tough to definitely say who the heroes and villains are by the end. That’s what really makes the story rise above others in this genre. The world, the decisions, and the characters felt real.
I give this one 5/5.
