Shane’s Take — Oath of Gold (The Deed of Paksenarrion #3)
I’ve read a little bit about this series now. Now that I know it was originally written as one book broken into a trilogy, it makes more sense. In the finale, we get the full redemptive arc for Paks. I had a lot of fun reading about Paks gaining her confidence back and finding her place and her true calling in the world.
It’s hard to explain, but as the story progressed, I felt it got more like any other generic fantasy. The reveal of the true king was so obvious that I found it hard to believe that Paks wouldn’t have considered it sooner. Also, without revealing any spoilers, the saving scene towards the end was a little too deus ex machina for me. For those reasons, it wasn’t as enjoyable for me to read. Still pretty good, but not great for me.
