2-step download: what is it, exactly?

When you design a « classic » mobile app, you create only one package: all content and information about the app are linked and inseparable.

This package — with all its contents — will be submitted in the stores. Every time you update information about it, you must submit the whole app, again.

Let’s be honest : it’s often quite long and stressful.

On the other hand, with a 2-step application, each app is divided in several packages: a « shell » and one — or more — « in-app », ie : the contents. The « shell » is much like an app’s birth certificate. It changes neither its structure nor its design and — as we said — the contents are stocked in the so-called « in-app ». The « shell » contains only one information about the app : its name.

Guess what ? It’s precisely that « shell » that you will submit on the stores. Users will download contents later, the first time they open the app.

2-step: the benefits for you

The main advantage of a 2-step application is that it enables real-time updates.

Since content is not submitted on the store, contrary to the « shell » that contains very little information, you can update contents as many time as you want / need. There will be no new submission and, therefore, no delay between two updates.

2-step also means « universal » applications. You no longer have to submit one app for every language but only one « shell » and, then, create an « in-app » for each language. The user chooses, the first time he uses the app, which language he’d like to download. As a result, one institution, one exhibition matches with only one app, without any language distinction. The offer on the stores also gains in legibility.

Does it change anything for the user?

Scarcely. 2-step download is perfectly assimilated by the smartphone owners. Major actors of the cultural and touristic sectors have already chosen 2-step applications ; the Louvre, the Institut National de l’Audiovisuel (INA) and Paris Musées for instance.

There are even some benefits for the user: since he or she downloads only one language, the 2-step app is slightly lighter than a « classic » mobile app. Regarding content updates, the user receives a notification only when he uses the app, that is to say : when he really needs that update.
