Get ready for iOS 12 and Android Pie

In September, whether you use Apple or Android, the Operating System (OS) of your phone — and that of all your visitors — will be updated. What consequence for your apps? An “OS”, what’s that?

“OS” stands for Operating System: the program that ensures the proper functioning of your device and of all the apps it contains. iOS is Apple’s OS: all iPhones are equipped with it. Android is Google’s OS; it is used on most other smartphones in circulation.

These Operating Systems — Android, iOS — are updated every year, so there are several versions of each in circulation. At smArtapps, we ensure the compatibility of your apps with the most recent and widespread versions of each OS: from iOS 8 to 11 for Apple, from Kitkat to Oreo for Android. (You read it right: Google has opted for candy names rather than numbers for the different versions of Android!)

Since an Operating System provides “the functioning of a device and of all the apps it contains,” then its update has an impact on YOUR mobile apps.

Last spring, Google and Apple announced the upcoming release of their new OS. Neither has communicated a specific date of release but the new version of Android will certainly be released late August and that of Apple mid-September.

In June, Google and Apple have made available to developers around the world a beta version of their respective future OS. This beta version allows to carry out tests, to discover some of their new functionalities and, above all, to report bugs to Apple and Google.

However, these versions remain betas and their new guidelines won’t be published before the new OS are released. Only then will we be able to tweak your apps to these new recommendations and update them for optimal performance with iOS 12 and Android Pie.
