Football in England stands out, with the Premier League acting as a beacon of high-stakes competition, fervent fandom, and thrilling matches. The league’s title race, always filled with uncertainty, captivates fans annually until the climax each May. In recent years, the storyline seemed scripted with Manchester City’s dominance — clinching the title five times since 2018, only interrupted by Liverpool’s significant win in 2020, their first in 30 years.

This season, however, tells a different story. While some traditional powerhouses like Chelsea, Manchester United, and Tottenham struggle with consistency, Arsenal shines as a beacon of hope under the guidance of the young and strategic Mikel Arteta. Last season, the Gunners almost reached glory but stumbled at the last moment, letting City overtake them. This year, they find themselves in an excitingly close race with City and Liverpool, with just a few points separating the top contenders as April unfolds.

In a familiar scenario, Arsenal nearly risked their chances again, losing 2–0 at home against Aston Villa. This slip gave their rivals, City, a chance to close the gap to just four points. Arteta’s frustration was clear as he talked about missed opportunities and the potential waste of the title in front of their own fans. Yet, after their Champions League exit at the hands of Bayern Munich, Arsenal’s focus sharpened. They responded strongly, thrashing Chelsea 5–0 and securing a hard-fought 3–2 victory at Tottenham, showing their determination to not let the title slip away easily, maintaining their lead with 80 points and just three games left.

Meanwhile, Liverpool’s campaign is weakening. The once top-placed team has dropped 10 points in April alone, including a 2–0 loss in the Merseyside derby against Everton and a 2–2 draw against West Ham that saw them slip to third place with 75 points. Even with a perfect finish, they could only reach 84 points, likely not enough to challenge the leaders.

Manchester City, the defending champions, are pressing hard, narrowing the gap on Arsenal to just one point following a 2–0 victory over Nottingham Forest. With a game in hand and sitting at 79 points, they are favorites to clinch their seventh league title in eight years. City’s journey, however, is filled with challenges, including matches against teams like Wolves and Spurs, both capable of causing upsets.

The league races toward a dramatic finale, and Arsenal faces three crucial matches against Bournemouth, Manchester United, and Everton. The penultimate match, against a major rival, could pose the biggest threat to Arsenal’s title hopes. Bournemouth and Everton, though strong, are less pressured, having secured their Premier League status for another season. Arsenal’s game against Manchester United, however, stands out as a key showdown that could decide the fate of the title. With the Gunners currently on 80 points, victories in their final three games would see them reach an unbeatable 89 points.

Manchester City, the defending champions and Arsenal’s closest challengers, sit just one point behind with 79 points but have an extra game in hand. Their remaining fixtures are against Wolves, Spurs, Fulham, and West Ham. While the matches against mid-table Fulham and Wolves might seem manageable, Spurs and West Ham could pose serious challenges. If City wins all their remaining matches, they could potentially reach 91 points, setting a high bar for Arsenal.

Here’s a simple breakdown of what Arsenal and Manchester City need to do:

  • Arsenal: Must win all their remaining games to reach 89 points. If City drops any points in their four remaining matches, Arsenal could afford a draw and still possibly win the title, assuming City doesn’t win their remaining games.
  • Manchester City: Must ideally win all their games to reach 91 points and not rely on Arsenal dropping points. Any slip-up could allow Arsenal to clinch the title, especially if City draws or loses any of their remaining matches.

Liverpool, currently in third place with 75 points from 35 games, can only achieve a maximum of 84 points if they win all their remaining games. This scenario likely puts them out of contention for the title unless both Arsenal and City collapse in the final weeks.

The closing weeks of the season are not just about securing the needed points; they are about showing the will to finish strong. This quality has been amply displayed by Arsenal. While City remains a formidable opponent, they must now play the role of the chaser in this thrilling title race. With a relatively straightforward path in their final matches and a team revitalized by recent setbacks, Arsenal stands on the brink of claiming their first Premier League title in twenty years. This season could indeed see them lifting their 14th first division title, a testament to their renewed vigor and tactical acumen under Arteta. To all Gunners fans, the celebrations are nearly upon you, marking the end of a long-awaited journey back to the pinnacle of English football. This title race is not just a test of skill but a demonstration of resilience and determination. Now is the time for Arsenal to reclaim the glory that has eluded them for two decades.
