Course Reflection: Inside the News Media
In the course of this semester we discussed a wide range of interesting, complex and thought-provoking topics; I particularly enjoyed the lessons on breaking news, media ethics and newspapers. Writing (and receiving) feedback was helpful, whereas writing blogs — for me — turned into a love-hate relationship: sometimes I didn’t know what to write about and I hated it, but as soon as I found an interesting topic, I couldn’t wait to present it to the class. Additionally, it needs to be said that everyone came up with intriguing posts, which were fun to read and comment on!
What I — as a future teacher — “take home” from this seminar is that we have a responsibility in regards to teaching (about) media. Young people will be confronted with and influenced by them even more than us and therefore they need to be able to critically reflect their (dis)advantages. You could do this in a regular lesson, as an optional subject or within the framework of a project week. There are several articles on this issue (e.g. L.I.S.A — das Wissenschaftsportal der Gerda Henkel Stifung, Kölnische Rundschau, Sofatutor, The Guardian), which I think are worth reading and considering.
Thanks for taking the time to read this! :)
