Do we need weekly newspapers?

In class today, we talked about how in the Europe that there is a decrease in the daily newspapers like the Daily Mail in the U.K. since there is a loss of revenue while weekly newspapers has seen a slow rise or at least some stabiliblity like Die Zeit in Germany.

That had me thinking. Should newspapers in general should be weekly?

In the U.S, the local daily newspaper is quite popular and strong especially in large cities like Atlanta, Los Angeles, Seattle and etc. because how much happens within the city throughout the day. Crime, sports, the weather and soft news about the local area. I mean seriously in major areas, there are a lot of things going on within the day.

I think the problem comes about if the city is quite small or there is not much action like Oxford, Mississippi or Mainz in Germany. The need for a daily newspaper is not really necessary. I mean how much goes on throughout the day in Mainz. So, a weekly newspaper would make sense.

In Frankfurt or Berlin, the idea of having a weekly paper might work but it could be a bit overwhelming depending on the amount of action or interesting or important stories.

Are weekly papers needed?

Depends on the location and action. In Mainz, yes. I personally don’t think that the city needs a daily newspaper. But places like Frankfurt, Hamburg or Berlin, depends on the company but in general, the daily newspaper might work.
