Inside the News Media

Due to our course coming to an end I would like to point out some further information on our topic “Inside the News Media”.

For anyone who hasn’t seen the film “Spotlight” I thoroughly recommend to watch the film.

The film deals with the discovery of a widespread child abuse scandal by the Roman Catholic Church.

Boston Globe “Spotlight” Team

It is a very interesting and intriguing film without the usual over the top Hollywood action. The film tries to stay as close to reality as possible without trying to influence or overload the viewer with action scenes. The reason why the film is an interesting topic for our course is due to the fact the viewer learns how investigative journalists work. One gets to know the dilemma the protagonists are continuously facing. Should they inform the public about the wrong-doing of the Church or should the Boston Globe Spotlight team continue with their research to unveil as much of the child molestation?

As I do not want to spoiler the whole plot of the film I would like to recommend further viewings such as the film “Zodiac”.

At a first thought the viewer wouldn’t think that the film “Zodiac” illustrates a typical media film.

Once again I do not intend to spoiler the film but rather arouse interest. The film portrays once again the dilemma is facing. Should the media publish the zodiac letters and risk havoc or keep quiet and risk innocent lives of civilians? Unlike my first suggestion I reckon this film illustrates part of the life of a journalist. But nevertheless it is a worthwhile watch.

For everyone who doesn’t know the series “Black Mirror” I thoroughly recommend watching this series. It is a dystopian portrayal of the future and the instrumentalisation of mankind. One can see it as a screening of Ray Bradbury’s “Fahrenheit 451”, George Orwell’s “1984” and Aldous Huxley’s “Brave New World”.
