How this course was of use to me…

I came to medium.com as a project for the course “Inside the News Media” and we were required to write an article on here every other week. At first I thought, that this would be really hard — to think of a new, innovative topic in just two weeks time. And I could’ve just written something unsubstantial, because this would’ve been easier. But my honor told me something different. I wanted to write something meaningful, maybe even about an idea nobody uttered before. Concepts of news media which are relevant to everyone who consumes them. So I committed myself to that, telling interesting stories and ideas to maybe change someones mind.

And as I expected it was really, really hard to come up with a valuable topic every other week. Every week I thought to myself, that I probably won’t find a topic in time. And towards the end I slowly ran out of ideas. All of the articles I wanted to write seemed to be already written, either by myself or somebody else. But this is the part where it actually becomes a fun activity: When you’re so much out of ideas that you have to be creative and think in areas you haven’t thought before.

At this point I feel like this course helped me the most, by discussing new things every week, helping me to get ideas, expanding my interest on certain topics.

In the end it was a good experience to be a writer in some way or another and it’s definitely something I will continue on doing. Not necessarily on medium.com, but definitely in some form. Now I know that writing about topics that matter to you can not only inspire other people, your readers, but also yourself — making you think, research and elaborate to make a point you probably hadn’t realized yet.
