Reflections — I’ll stay on Medium.com

I really have to say that “Inside the News Media” genuinely surprised me.

It was very special to get insights on how news media and social media really work, primarily because this is a topic I never specifically thought about, like for example how journalists work on an everyday basis, or what news stations do when breaking (or even shocking) news come in and need to be broadcasted live even though none of the people in the station really know what has happened where, when and how. Most of the new information we learned was very eye-opening, since one wouldn’t be able to receive it from someone who doesn’t have experience with media like our teacher does. This is not normal for a university seminar, which is why I am happy to have participated in the course.

But although I enjoyed the content of the course so very much, the biggest asset for me was the students’ obligation to write blog posts/comments on Medium.com every week. I loved this way of intensifying my approach to the topic of news meda criticism by becoming a media-critic myself, commenting on topics on the news, on Facebook or on other platforms that I had a sincere interest in. I believe that this way of deepening one’s understanding of a topic is by far the best that I have encountered in my university studies. I had the feeling of connecting to the seminar’s themes on an interest-based level, which motivated me and made me want to write posts not only to do my homework but to create something worth reading. I also want to thank our teacher for encouraging us in promoting and sharing our posts on social media (for me it was on Facebook). I think that many people share an interest about the background of news media (-critique) and thus hopefully enjoyed reading.

Consequently, I can only recommend this course to anybody who has the slightest interest in media. As for my blogging-habit: I am currently planning on documenting my internship abroad in Torquay, England (August-October) on Medium.com . It will be great to not only experience cultural differences but also formulating and sharing my thoughts with friends and strangers alike.
