Social Media vs Reality

Let’s be honest, social media and the way one can present himself is awesome. You want to update your profile picture? Well I guess one or two filters never hurt nobody.
If you follow a lot of famous persons, bloggers or just “inspiring” people on Instagram for example, most of the time it’s not just one or two filters. The magic trick most of them make use of? Photoshop.
Basically every celebrity’s selfie that we see on the internet is photoshopped.
And this phenomena doesn’t just occur on social media platforms, you can also find it in print media. All the models in commercials or in fashion magazines are ridiculously good looking, thanks to that smart picture editing program.

Don’t get me wrong, I love Queen B, I just think that all these celebrities are just setting unrealistic beauty standards. And these standards don’t just affect females…

The main problem is that not even half of what you see on Instagram for example is true. But most of the people don’t really seem to get this.
“Why don’t I look like her” , “how is her skin so flawless”, “why doesn’t she have a single stretchmark”, … the list goes on. Instagram is ruining our self-esteem. The point is YOU DON’T HAVE TO LOOK PERFECT, nobody actually does.
The dangerous thing about Instagram is that it’s not as obvious as in a fashion campaign for example. There are dozens of apps that you can use to erase blemishes and dark circles, make your eyes look bigger, your face thinner, retouching all of one’s flaws. But who actually thinks that a person who “casually posts a selfie” makes use of all of these apps?

So please think about it the next time you want to criticize yourself. Nobody’s perfect, not even those beautiful people on Instagram.
