Windows 10 — Did I get myself a spy and paid for it on top?

Nearly done! The last semester, before I tackle my bachelor thesis, has nearly come to an end. Three weeks to go and I am done with all my courses. Looking back I think I did quite well and I thought for the last two term papers and the bachelor thesis I will spoil myself with a new computer.

The real reason to get a new one was actually that my current computer is on his last legs. Really easy tasks have become a challenge for my 6 year old laptop. People look at me at the library because my laptop makes these loud noises. Surfing the internet drives me crazy. Simple things like loading a website take ages. The same defects apply to other things: When working in a word or power point document easy tasks just take way too long. I had come to that point where I couldn’t take it any longer.

The new laptop is there. With it along came the new operating system: Windows 10. The one of which I heard so many complaints. The free update on my old computer I avoided successfully until now…

So what’s the problem with Windows 10? The problem has to do with data protection. Apparently my data is not protected as much as it used to be. Windows 10 collects private data to a great extent. For this reason I thought I should inform myself a bit now that I have it. For anybody who is going to deal with Windows 10 I really recommend this video here on chip.de. They show exactly what you have to do in order to restrict data collection by Windows. It’s only 5 minutes and really worth watching. You will be astonished by all the features you have to switch off! It is remarkable in how many ways Windows 10 would collect my data if I wouldn’t restrict it. Just to know: You cannot completely turn the collection off.

On the other hand I keep thinking — How long will I be able to avoid it anyway? How long will it take to be a transparent human being? I also think — Do I have a choice at all if I still want to take part in society? What are your thoughts on this? Are you as anxious as I am or do you not worry as much as I do?
