For the coming four months I will be the new Creative intern at VBAT. Currently I just finished the third year of the Royal Academy of Arts in the Hague (KABK) and hopefully will be graduating next year.

For my internship I chose VBAT for numerous reasons. Throughout my years of studying and internships, I have come to know that VBAT is ‘one of the big ones’ and that for me means knowledge. VBAT also has an impressive collection of work, my favourite project is definitely the rebranding of “Brand beer”. Oh, and my mother Nancy Valies had interned at VBAT exactly 20 years ago.

Being creative in my eyes has always been a big coincidence for me.

As a young kid, I never knew what I wanted to do because it seemed I liked everything. I once visited an open day at Grafisch Lyceum Rotterdam in 2008 and immediately fell in love with the amount of options within Graphic Design and you will see this back in my variety of work. This openness helps me to find specific interests such as packaging, Japanese design, corporate and interactive design. After graduation of GLR I was hungry for more in depth knowledge and technique, which brought me to the Art Academy in the Hague, which I started in 2013.

But here I am now in the third week of interning at VBAT. These first two weeks have been fun and interesting to say the least. The work place is big and bright. My colleagues are open and nice.

I already know that I can learn so much from each individual and that the four months of internship will not be enough for me.

By the end of the first week I participated in the workshop: WHAT DESIGN CAN DO FOR MUSIC: with Marcus Lyall and Joep Beving. A highly interactive breakout session that was led by Marcus and VBAT. All participants had to create a piece of film while beautiful music composed by Joep Beving was playing in the background. We got our hands dirty drawing, painting, etching and scratching to create our visuals.

The workshop reminded me of my Academy. We experimented and played with material and the end result was super cool.

All our films where sliced together to create a sequence where you could see the original film (some blank) and our work made on top of it. The artwork was then projected on the main stage at What Design Can Do as the backdrop to the live piano performance by Joep.

Being able to participate in these kind of workshops as an intern means a lot to me. VBAT is a super fun place to have your internship. So far so good.
