Since 2015, the International Research Institute for Climate and Society (IRI) supported the research, prototyping and end-user validation processes of a new insurance application for Colombian coffee farmers. The product is now being piloted by Nespresso and Blue Marble.

“First we carried out field research to develop a prototype solution against drought and excess rainfall during the most vulnerable phases of the coffee production cycle,” said Sofía Martínez, who led IRI’s engagement with project partners. “We then supported the program by carrying out a suite of participatory exercises for design validation and customer testing.”

Martínez said they also provided stakeholders with tailored maps using the IRI Data Library for monitoring rainfall levels through satellite data.

The pilot includes around 2,000 farmers across over 5,700 hectares in the Aguadas and Norte de Caldas farmer cooperatives in Caldas, Colombia.
