Hello everyone! This week, Iā€™ve been exploring the fundamentals of one-on-one relationships. These concepts apply not only to your personal life but can also significantly enhance your interactions with colleagues and peers.

Today, Iā€™d like to delve into a valuable approach that can be a solution to many of the challenges we face in our interactions: Active Listening and the Art of Asking Questions.

Youā€™ve likely come across the age-old adage, ā€œListen before you speak,ā€ more than once. This phrase embodies a core principle of effective human communication. Carl Rogers, a prominent figure in the realms of psychology and communication, underscored the significance of empathetic listening within the context of client-centered therapy. His work contributed significantly to our understanding of how listening plays a pivotal role in fostering effective communication (Rogers, 1987).

In one of his writings, Rogers suggests that listening, while often perceived as passive, is far from it. He notes, ā€œListening cannot be sufficient in itself because, to many, it appears passive and, as such, fails to communicate anything to the speaker. In reality, nothing could be further from the truthā€ (Rogers, 1987).

This principle isnā€™t confined to a specific communication setting; it can be applied universally. Picture it within the context of a romantic relationship. Youā€™ve probably heard your partner say at some point, ā€œYouā€™re not really listening to me.ā€ Similarly, misunderstandings can arise in the workplace when colleagues find themselves entrenched in disputes fueled by differing viewpoints.

In such situations, the solution often starts with active listening. By actively listening, you signal that you value the other personā€™s perspective, even if you donā€™t necessarily agree with it. Itā€™s a way of demonstrating respect and creating space for their ideas.

However, active listening alone may not suffice. After empathizing with their viewpoint, if you wish to advance your own ideas, you must engage the other person in a thoughtful dialogue. This is where the power of asking questions comes into play.

As Steven Bartlett aptly puts it in his book, ā€œThe Diary of a CEO,ā€ the approach is to ā€œAsk, Donā€™t Tell.ā€ Through thoughtful questioning, you prompt the other person to contemplate your perspective, understand your point of view, and navigate towards a mutually beneficial solution. This process not only involves listening actively but also engaging in a productive exchange, ensuring that both parties evolve in the process.

Itā€™s crucial to emphasize that this isnā€™t about imposing your ideas. Instead, itā€™s a collaborative journey towards finding the best path forward. Think of it as a fusion of active listening and questioning, all aimed at reaching a shared goal.

These principles can also be applied effectively in conflict resolution. As Liz Kislik highlights in her TEDx Talk, asking the right questions is key to not only understanding but also resolving conflicts. By delving into the root causes through active listening and questioning, you pave the way for comprehensive understanding and lasting resolutions.

In conclusion, the two-pronged approach of active listening and asking the right questions is a powerful tool in enhancing your relationships, whether personal or professional. By actively listening, you create a foundation, and by asking questions, you enable growth, understanding, and collaborative problem-solving. Itā€™s a key element in the art of effective communication.

Book

Currently, I am immersed in the book ā€œUniversity Students in Hellā€ by A.M. Celal Şengƶr. This insightful work primarily focuses on the situation in our beloved country, Turkey, and our approaches to it. I wholeheartedly recommend reading it to gain a unique perspective on the intersection of science and thinking (Şengƶr, 2016, University Students in Hell).

As Şengƶr discusses the life of Piri Reis in a part, it becomes evident that Piri Reis is a figure of global significance, not merely renowned for his maritime achievements but for his distinct approach and intellectual contributions. Through Piri Reis, we are reminded of the profound importance of observation and the invaluable insights that critical thinking can extract from such observations.

I highly recommend this book as a means to enhance oneā€™s thinking and approach to various aspects of life.

Life-Saver Item

Pin boards are an absolute lifesaver! I understand that we live in a tech-savvy world with countless websites and apps for goal-setting and tracking, but hereā€™s the deal ā€” Iā€™m in my 30s, not exactly ancient, and let me tell you, thereā€™s something incredibly effective about putting pen to paper and pinning your goals on a physical board.

Every day, as I sit down and glance at those goals right in front of me, itā€™s like a burst of motivation that just canā€™t be replicated by staring at a screen where the goal is just one of many tabs or apps. Thereā€™s a tangible power in seeing your aspirations right there on your pin board.

I wholeheartedly recommend having one in your room, especially if youā€™re working from home. Trust me, itā€™s a game-changer!

P.S. You can even use it for small, fun notes and messages, not just for yourself but for your partner too! šŸ˜ŠšŸ“Œ
