When it comes to Christmas, it’s never easy to decide on gifts. You’ve got a child, a friend, or a girl/boyfriend who happens to be a medical student? Don’t worry, I’ve collected a list of quite a few items — from all price ranges — that would definitely make someone happy who’s into the world of medicine. I listed some handy things, but also some funny and entertaining items.

Useful stuff for medical students

1. Subscriptions

There are lots of apps and services out there that could help a LOT studying different things. As low-income students, it’s not always easy to purchase the subscription for the Premium version — which usually gives significantly more than the free version. The list is incomplete, but here’s a couple of examples: With InSimu Patient, med students get their own virtual patients to diagnose, they can learn the different diagnostic pathways while playing. If you’d like your loved one to become House MD, this one’s for you! Lecturio is an online platform where med students can successfully learn those topics that they missed in class. Professional lecturers give short, but informative videos with review question to help to study more productively.

2. Stethoscope

The first stethoscope in a med student’s life is something really special. Generally speaking, you don’t need an incredibly expensive cardiological one to study physical examination. Usually, this Littmann is just perfect for medical students. And it comes in tons of color, so this can be a really personalised gift.

3. Books

They might seem a little old-fashioned in the world of Kindles, but believe me: a medical book can never be replaced! If your loved one is at the beginning of his/her studies, just grab an Anatomy atlas (Gray’s Anatomy or Sobotta). An Oxford Handbook is extremely useful for those who’re on clinical rotations. If you know what specialty they love, choose one from that. However, Oxford’s Handbook of Clinical Medicine is basically an excellent choice for every med student.

4. Stationery

Who doesn’t love a beautiful notebook, some colorful pens, and highlighters to make better notes or a pretty planner for the new year? I think you just simply can’t go wrong with stationary.

5. Devices

If you have a little more to spend, consider getting your loved med student a new iPad or laptop. These are essential for every university, and they might not be able to afford them.

6. Scrubs

If you know the clothing size, go ahead and find some scrubs: they will definitely get the use out of it if you go with a neutral color (like white or blue). You can find some great options on this site.

Funny, beautiful, entertaining but definitely not so useful gadgets:

1. A funny mug

It’s always a good idea! Especially, that most med students are basically caffeine addicted. My personal favorite is this onefrom Etsy. However, these are something that you can even do yourself!

2. A beautiful necklace

…can also be very well appreciated. DNA, stethoscope, or serotonin pendants are a good choice!

3. Kitchenware

Believe it or not, some med students are into cooking! For them, this X-Ray oven mitt glove might be a great idea!

4. Pandemic

This one is a very popular board game not only for medical professionals but for the whole family. What’s amazing about this one is that you all have to work together instead of against each other to win… You have to defeat the game itself! Oh, and it’s about a deadly pandemic — if you haven’t guessed it yet, so med students will be into it. Click here to have a look.

5. Lunchbox

Which medical student wouldn’t want a transplantation lunchbox? It actually goes well with the glove mentioned above.

6. And lastly, a print that’s motivating, funny, or simply just eye-catching? I’d be to receive something like this! Just have a look around Etsy, for the surgeon-to-be-s, I’d recommend this one.
