Senior scientist in the Professorship of Computational Social Science, at ETH Zurich, and Insolar research team member Dr. Evangelos Pournaras was awarded Best Demo Award at the 13th IEEE International Conference on Self-Adaptive and Self-Organizing Systems (SASO 2019). The award was granted to Dr. Pournaras and his academic colleagues for their paper which illustrates a technology readiness level (TRL) 6 live demonstrator of the Dynamic Intelligent Aggregation Service (DIAS), which performs real-time, decentralized data analytics in a privacy-preserving way.
Technology readiness levels are used for estimating the technological maturity of a particular innovation. In their live demonstrator, DIAS is linked to the Global Database of Events Language and Tone (GDELT), to provide collective measurements about the total number of news events in different countries.
You can see the TRL 6 live demonstrator illustrated in the academics’ paper at http://dias-net.org/dias-gdelt-live/. In the live demonstrator, DIAS is linked to GDELT to provide collective measurements about the total number of news events in different countries.”

Dr. Evangelos Pournaras is a senior scientist in the Professorship of Computational Social Science, at ETH Zurich, Zurich, Switzerland. He was earlier at Delft University of Technology and VU University Amsterdam in the Netherlands, where he completed his PhD studies in 2013 with the thesis “Multi-level Reconfigurable Self-organization in Overlay Services”. Since 2007, he holds a MSc with distinction in Internet Computing from University of Surrey, UK and since 2006 a BSc on Technology Education and Digital Systems from University of Piraeus, Greece. Evangelos has also been a visiting researcher at EPFL in Switzerland and has industry experience at the IBM T.J. Watson Research Center in the USA. He serves the editorial board and the program committees of several international conferences and journals. He has several publications in high-impact journals and conferences in the area of distributed systems, including a best journal paper award. Smart Grids, Smart Cities and social sensing/mining are some application domains of his expertise. Evangelos is the founder of several research projects such as the EPOS, DIAS and SFINA, featured at decentralized-systems.org.
