Your light — your compassion, forgiveness, love, grace and faith — is always inside of you but (as with any light) it is at its most prominent and powerful in the darkness.

When the world around you seems dark and conflicted, it is natural to want to change the things that scare you, confront you, anger you. At these times, we tend to point our fingers and claim “This is wrong!”, “You must change!” or “This is to blame!”

When you find yourself in this mindset, be gentle on you. You are only human. And, as such, you have inherited a misguided belief that you have the ability, somehow, to control the world out there. If you stamp hard enough, shout loud enough or resist strongly enough, you have been told, then the offending situation (or person) will wilt under your superior willpower and fade away.

But the truth is that when you are in this cycle of confrontation, control and coercion, you are actually amplifying the darkness around you. Meeting conflict with aggression, anger, blame or intolerance only serves to deepen the shadows.

In contrast, your light it is at its most powerful in the darkness.

When the world is dark, we each have an ability (and perhaps a responsibility?) to shine at our brightest and bring light to the shadows. Through conscious and courageous choice, you can:

  • Replace judgement and blame with applied empathy. Learn to acknowledge and understand the needs and values of others (especially if they differ from your own)
  • Amplify gratitude. Give daily thanks for the blessings in your life — both big and small.
  • Commit to ‘inspired action’. Anchor your actions, reactions and words in love, peacefulness and compassion.
  • Make kindness a daily practice. Smile at others. Extend unexpected kindnesses. Share good news on social media and in your social circles.
  • Allow yourself the faith to know that All is Well. Goodness arises from every situation. Always.
  • Be an example.

Those who know their light have nothing to fear from the darkness. Shine on!
