“What gives you energy?”

The question had arrived in an email from an online publication, prompting its writing community to share their insights on the topic. The query itself was innocuous but it unsettled me deeply. Here’s why …

Embedded within the question What gives you energy? is a huge assumption; one that is ubiquitous in society and that undermines much of our individual capacity for self-worth, happiness and fulfillment.

Whether it be the things that give us energy, the emotions that others make us feel, the education we have received, the appreciation we have earned … the implication is that we are given such things. What we possess, we only do so because of some external person or thing; what we lack, we need to source from somewhere “out there”.

It is my firm view that we do not need anything to give us energy. Our energy is a result of our life force; our qi, prana, mana, wakan, ki. It wells up from within us from the moment our lives begin and dissipates when we pass beyond the vale.

Possessing energy, drive, enthusiasm and motivation is both natural and effortless when we are sufficiently nurtured, when we are aligned with our most authentic values and when are being true to ourselves as individuals.

We don’t need anything to give us energy — but we do need, at times, to acknowledge the relationships, career choices, lifestyle habits and mental patterns that deplete us of our natural vibrancy, before we have a chance to focus it in productive and fulfilling ways.

But your energy is only one thing that is generated within: your grit, your joy, your creativity, your knowing and your own personal well of self-worth and self-belief — all of these things flourish effortlessly within you, if you can get out of your way enough to discover them.

If you search for them in the only place they truly reside.

It is inevitable that you will have times when you feel ‘lacking in’ energy, or any of these other vital elements. When you do so, I implore you, don’t search for something ‘out there’ to fill you up.

Come back to the source — you! — and focus on where and why you have been squandering, ignoring or giving your precious resources away.
