The Hole

And what to remember when you are in one

One evening, a man walking home after a night out, thought he saw a fifty-pound note at the bottom of a deep hole in roadworks near the city centre.

He jumped in to grab it but was disappointed. It wasn’t a fifty-pound note. It was a food wrapper.

Then he realised the fifteen feet sheer walls made it impossible to get out of the hole.

He called for help, but no-one came. The city fell dark and silent.

He got cold and frightened. He couldn’t see a way out and he didn’t know what to do.

Then when he thought all was lost, he heard a voice from above. It shouted:

“Are you OK?”

“No, I’m stuck. I can’t get out” he shouted back.

“How come?”

“The walls are sheer; I can’t climb them.”

“OK, hang on. I’ll help you.”

With that, the man jumped into the hole.

The first man berated him:

“Why have you jumped in here? Now we’re both stuck”

“No,” said the second man, “I’ve been in this hole before and I know how to get out.”

. . .

Sometimes we find ourselves in dark holes, occasionally of our own making. When that happens, realise you won’t have been the first person to have been in that hole and others figured out how to get out. Sometimes, they may come along and help you, sometimes you might have to figure it out yourself but you can and will.
