THE ADVENT WRITING CHALLENGE DAY 7
Exploring the traditional Christmas Carol, “In Dulci Jubilo.”
And the unlikely 1970s pop hit version from a prog maestro.
Christmas carols have traditionally been an essential part of the joy of Christmas.
But the popularity of carols appears to be waning fast among the younger generation.
A study found that 46 per cent of 18 to 29-year-olds have never sung a traditional carol such as Silent Night or O come all ye faithful.
Instead, they are more likely to prefer a festive pop song such as Mariah Carey’s All I Want For Christmas Is You or Bing Crosby’s crooning White Christmas.
The drop in popularity of Christmas Carols has meant that some formerly popular Christmas carols are falling into disuse.
A survey by “The i” newspaper in the UK found that lesser-known carols, including the Coventry Carol and “Christians Awake, Salute the Happy Morn”, are rapidly fading from memory.
However, the survey found that “In Dulci Jubilo” — with 47% of those surveyed — was the LEAST well-known of the traditional carols.
