Greetings, my friends. Welcome back to Jumping into James, where we are working our way through the letter of James in our weekly bible study.

We have reached Chapter 4, where we find a densely packed section (verses 1 to 10) consisting of a series of practical teaching points. This time we have verses 9 and 10, so let’s get started and see what God has for us this week.

Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up. James 4.9–10, NIV)

The core teaching of these verses is that the Christian life won’t always be sunshine and rainbows.

We ALL know this. But it’s incredible how many people somehow think they can be the one person for whom this isn’t true…

Sometimes life will involve acknowledging and mourning our sins, humbling ourselves before God,

Sometimes it will be about submitting to His will to receive His grace, mercy and favour.

Sometimes it will mean struggling to understand where God is and how our life makes sense anymore…
